When to go
For long walks among brick ruins, choose November through February. January is dry and clear at about 32°C/21°C with roughly 8 mm of rain; February stays dry at around 34°C/23°C and 12 mm. Where to stay
Old City / Pratu Chai
This is the historic island: a practical, atmospheric base where the day begins with temple gates rather than a long ride across town. It suits first-time visitors, couples and anyone staying only one or two nights who wants Wat Mahathat, Wat Ratchaburana, Wat Phra Si Sanphet, Wat Phra Ram and the Chao Sam Phraya National Museum within the core sightseeing area. Rojana Road / Phai Ling
Rojana Road and Phai Ling feel more modern and functional than the old island, with shopping, restaurants, service apartments and easier car access. It fits families who value a larger room, business travellers, and digital nomads using Grab or a hired car rather than walking between ruins.

Riverside near Wat Chaiwatthanaram
The western riverside slows the pace down: this is for a later breakfast, a river-facing table and Wat Chaiwatthanaram when the light softens. It suits couples, photographers and travellers who would rather book a scenic stay than optimise every minute around the central ruins.

Train Station / Hua Ro
The station and Hua Ro side is the efficient arrival base: less scenic than the old island, but useful if you are coming by rail, travelling alone on a tighter budget, or leaving early for Bangkok. It suits backpackers and rail-first itineraries more than a riverside splurge.
Most rooms are roughly US$15–45, so the area is better value-oriented than classic mid-range. P.U. The small river crossing, food stalls and onward connections are close; the headline ruins sit roughly 4 km away. Temple manners are simple, and they matter. Cover shoulders and knees before entering active temple areas. Keep your shoes off where requested, give monks space and do not touch them.
