When to go
For clear water, reliable boat days, and long beach afternoons, come between February and April. Koh Phangan is warm all year, but its rainfall pattern is different from Phuket and Thailand’s Andaman coast: the wettest stretch arrives late, with October and November carrying the biggest downpours. Thong Sala
Thong Sala is Koh Phangan’s practical center: a ferry town with market food, pharmacies, ATMs, coffee, scooter rentals, and the island’s main transport connections. It suits first-timers, short stays, travelers arriving late by ferry, and anyone who wants to explore more than one coast without committing to a remote beach.
Mid-range rooms generally sit around ฿1,000–2,800, or US$30–84, though actual rates rise during Christmas, New Year, and Full Moon Party weeks. You can walk to Thong Sala Pier, Pantip Market, food stalls, ferry offices, convenience stores, cafés, and the town’s everyday services. It is not the island’s prettiest beach base, but it works well when you want breakfast near the pier, a simple lunch at the market, and a short taxi ride out to the west coast.

Sri Thanu and Haad Chao Phao
Sri Thanu is the west-coast base for yoga studios, health-focused cafés, coworking-friendly spots, and late afternoons around Zen Beach. It suits digital nomads, long-stay visitors, solo travelers, and couples who care more about quiet routines than all-night nightlife. Out Thailand

Sri Thanu Beach, Zen Beach, yoga studios, vegan and vegetarian restaurants, coffee shops, and casual sunset bars are close enough to reach on foot depending on your exact hotel. This is a better area for unhurried mornings than for quick ferry departures, so plan a taxi if you have luggage.
There is no station or rail service. Thong Sala Pier is the nearest transport hub, about 15–20 minutes away by road in normal conditions, though rain and traffic can stretch that journey.

Haad Yao, Haad Salad, and Mae Haad
The northwest coast gives you the version of Koh Phangan that many first imagine: pale sand, calm-looking bays, sunset restaurants, and resorts set above the water. Haad Yao, Haad Salad, and Mae Haad suit families, couples, and travelers who want beach access without Haad Rin’s party infrastructure. Out Thailand

From the right hotel, you can walk to Haad Yao Beach, Haad Salad Beach, Mae Haad Beach, small beachfront restaurants, and the Koh Ma sandbar. Koh Ma is especially useful for travelers who want an easy snorkeling day without committing to a full boat trip.

Haad Rin and Baan Tai
Haad Rin is where the island’s Full Moon Party happens, centered on Haad Rin Nok beach. Baan Tai stretches north along the southeast coast and works as a more spread-out, usually quieter alternative between Haad Rin and Thong Sala. This is the right area if the party is part of your plan, or if you want a cheaper southeast-coast base with easy road access in both directions. Out Thailand

Things to do
Half-day
Snorkel at Koh Ma from Mae Haad. Walk or ride to Mae Haad Beach, then cross the sandbar toward Koh Ma when conditions allow. It is the island’s simplest independent snorkeling option, although conditions vary with weather and water clarity. There is no reliable current price for a Koh Ma-only organized trip in the research, so budget for transport and rental gear rather than quoting a package rate.
Drive the Than Sadet and east-coast circuit. Than Sadet waterfall and the quieter east coast make a good half-day if you want roads, jungle, rock pools, and a different feel from the developed west coast. Local tips + scams
Start with the manners that make daily interactions easier. Keep your hands to yourself and do not touch anyone’s head. Keep your feet low and avoid pointing them toward people, Buddha images, or sacred objects. When you enter a temple or private home, cover your shoulders and knees. On the island, it is also worth keeping your voice down when speaking with staff, drivers, or shop owners; calm conversation gets you further than public frustration.

Scooter disputes are another predictable problem. Before leaving a rental shop, record a slow video of every panel, wheel, mirror, light, and existing scratch. Wear a helmet, never ride after drinking, and do not assume the road from Thong Sala to a remote beach will be forgiving after rain. This is less about proving someone dishonest and more about avoiding a stressful argument at the end of your trip.
